How we work

Communications is never the objective. Growth, trust, adoption, permission, and resilience are.

We occupy the space between consultants who diagnose but do not build and agencies that build before sufficiently diagnosing. We do both, with senior people, structured around the problem rather than a standard retainer.

Principles

Five commitments on every engagement.

These are the reasons a company hires Chaos Consulting instead of another firm, and the standards we hold ourselves to once hired.

We diagnose before we prescribe.

We do not assume the client's initial diagnosis is correct. Traditional agencies are built around capabilities, so PR firms find PR solutions and public-affairs firms find political solutions. If you ask for PR and your real problem is positioning, we will tell you. If the actual problem is operational, we will tell you that too.

We start with the people who matter.

Most corporate communications begins with what the company wants to say. We begin with who needs to care and what is true from their perspective. What do they believe? Who do they trust? What would need to happen for them to think or behave differently?

We build around the business objective.

Every recommendation connects back to what the business is trying to accomplish. Coverage, followers, and impressions are measurements, and only when they move something that matters.

We use the right tool.

We are not attached to a predetermined deliverable. The answer might be media, an executive strategy, an influencer, proprietary research, a coalition, a complete repositioning, or fixing something inside the business before communicating externally. The problem determines the work.

We carry strategy through execution.

We do not hand over a deck and disappear. We help turn strategy into action, and when the solution requires capabilities beyond Consulting, we draw on the broader House of Chaos ecosystem.

Engagement models

Structured around the problem.

We do not force every client into the same retainer. Scope, timeline, and economics follow the diagnosis, and we share them after we understand the situation.

Strategic projects

Best for clearly defined problems with a defined objective, scope, and timeline.

  • Positioning and narrative strategy
  • Reputation audits and narrative intelligence
  • Market-entry strategy
  • Crisis preparedness
  • Executive positioning
  • Communications infrastructure
  • Public-affairs strategy and creative-risk assessments

Ongoing advisory and execution

Best when the client needs sustained senior counsel and implementation across multiple workstreams.

  • Strategic counsel and reputation
  • Media and executive communications
  • Public affairs and issues management
  • Thought leadership and digital influence
  • Ongoing narrative intelligence

Fractional leadership

Best for companies that need senior communications leadership without immediately building a full internal function.

  • Fractional chief communications officer
  • Senior strategic adviser
  • Communications-office extension
  • Interim communications leadership

Special situations

For moments that are urgent, consequential, or unusually complicated. Designed around the situation rather than a standard scope.

  • Crisis and litigation
  • Regulatory controversy
  • Leadership transition or acquisition
  • Activist pressure
  • Unexpected political exposure

What clients are buying

Media relations, messaging, and research are tools.

What clients actually buy is the ability to move a business from where it is to where leadership needs it to be. Eight things, in order.

Clarity

What is actually happening?

Diagnosis

What is really causing the problem?

Perspective

How does the situation look to the people outside the company?

Strategy

What should we do about it?

Storytelling

How do we make the right people understand why this matters?

Influence

Who can affect the outcome and how do we reach them?

Execution

How do we turn the strategy into something real?

Movement

How do we get from where the business is today to where it needs to be?

The House of Chaos advantage

Four companies. One problem at a time.

Chaos Consulting is part of House of Chaos, a storytelling company built around understanding people, solving problems, and finding more compelling ways through. Clients do not need all four companies. The value is being able to bring the right capabilities together when the problem demands it.

Chaos Technologies

Data, intelligence, technology, audience insight, network analysis, and tools that help uncover what others may not see.

Chaos Productions

Creative development and production that turn strategy into things people can see, hear, feel, and remember.

Chaos Media

Media properties, distribution, audience development, publishing, and new ways for stories to find the people they were built for.

Sometimes the best engagement ends with you needing us less.

When the internal operation has become stronger, the narrative has an owner, and the systems hold, that is a success. Tell us where you are and we will tell you what we think the actual problem is.
